About

Hi, I'm Merrick.

I recently graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania studying Business Analytics and Management with a specialization in Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and a minor in computer science.

With a passion for both retail and technology, I’m interested in consumer tech, retail startups, and luxury branding. My industry interests include consumer productivity technology, luxury goods, and direct to consumer retail.

A lot of people wonder how I got my name. My mother named me after Joseph Merrick, a man who was shunned by society but triumphed over adversity with remarkable strength and determination. Known as “The Elephant Man,” Joseph Merrick faced significant challenges but turned what others saw as weaknesses into his unique strengths. My mother admired his resilience and the way he embraced his identity, and so she named me Merrick.

Technology
Lover

I love learning about new technology and the impact it might have on transforming the world we live in. From the latest advancements in mobile phones to the growing opportunities for AR and VR, I’m looking forward to seeing how these become part of our everyday lives.

Meticulous
Self Improver

I truly believe in the power of a growth mindset. I’ve always thought that if I put my mind to something, I can do it. As childish as it might seem, I’ve been able to come out of seemingly impossible scenarios several times by doing so. I continuously set new goals for myself. Right now, I’m focusing on my physical fitness and mental health.

Constant
Adventurer

As a life long learner, I live for new and exciting experiences. I hope to see the world and its beauty. My curiosity pushes me into new situations and encourages me to explore new places and activities, from curling to music production. As a self proclaimed food connoisseur, I believe food is one of the best ways to explore new cultures.

My Journey to Business

Growing up I always had a business mind. In elementary school, I baked and sold sugar cookies to classmates, then shifted to creating origami to cut down on costs. When we had yard sales, I explored different marketing and pricing tactics. In high school, I worked on developing a startup focused on sustainable culinary technology.

What I’ve learned is that above all, I love to create. Whether that’s cooking or making videos, I love the act of creating. To me, business is another way to create – it’s a way to create something beyond myself that’ll help others live better lives. The idea of walking down the street and seeing people using a product that I made is crazy to me. Still, that’s my dream.

Fun Facts

There’s a lot more to a person than meets the eye.
Here’s a little bit more about me.

I lived in Japan for 6 months

Toward the end of 2023, I made the bold decision to move to Japan and lived there for 6 months. Japan reminded me why I love food, made me rethink how I spend my weekends, and made me reimagine the routines in my life every day.

I went to the VMAs and was in every video

I had the honor of going to the Video Music Awards in 2023. I was right by the center stage as Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, Shakira, and more performed so I’m in every YouTube recording. I also touched Taylor Swift’s hand and award.

I made a Reddit RoastMe and got 7.7k upvotes

Accepting criticism is important. So I made a Reddit RoastMe and got 7.7k upvotes. Half the comments called me an Asian Tom Holland…

I solo-traveled for a month in Scandinavia

I went to Scandinavia alone, but returned home with many new friends and a life-changing experience.

I've been in the same studio as Justin Bieber

In Sydney, I worked out of Studio 301, where big artists like Lady Gaga have recorded. I sadly never actually saw anyone famous though…

I've seen the Aurora Borealis

There was a less than 1% chance of seeing the aurora during the month I was in Iceland. I used to think little of them, but it’s incredibly different seeing it in person!

I know the
Little Mermaid in Russian

I took Russian in high school for 3 years and loved it. Just for fun, I learned the words to Disney’s “Part of Your World” in Russian!

I taught myself how to juggle

After watching a guy on America’s Got Talent juggle 20 balls, I knew I should be able to juggle a mere 3. This mindset has pushed me to learn a bunch of new random skills.

I've eaten whale before - it's like tuna and steak

I love trying new foods and learning about different cultures through their food. In Iceland, I tried whale. It tastes like a mix of tuna and steak!

I made a short film playing all the characters

I love video editing. In high school I made a comedic video exploring the origin of foods like milk and honey and played all the characters!

I almost missed my graduation

I had the opportunity to study Russian abroad in Estonia. But wanted to be in person.

I've been to Prada HQ

See my travels to Italy!

I won an iPhone in an instagram giveaway

I’m an optimist. There is always a small part of me that has hope for what others deem impossible.

I've been on the People's Court

Before you get the wrong idea, I was on the show as part of the jury in the background! Sat behind the plaintiff.
